Behind the Music

I bought music on the internets tonight for what might have been the first time.

I paid to download an album called Kingdom Come by Dirt Circle Dogs.

And I paid for it because I trust that the people that made it will do good things with the money I sent them.*

I bought the album to support people, the people behind the music, the people behind the business.

And, while exceptional crunchiness is not the reason I want to support the Dogs, apparently one of them does a bunch of work on a website with a pretty crunchy focus.

*I sent the money through a site called CD Baby. A site run by a warehouse of music lovers in Portland, OR. A site that says they give 91% of music buyers’ money to music producers. A site that made an incredibly good first impression on me. A site I want to support and promote.

Thanks for the love Jake - hope you enjoy the album.

I had the same first impression of CD Baby. I had to talk to their support people a few times through the process of getting this album up and every time they were friendly to the point of commenting on the cover art and instrumentation. They were genuinely interested.

And their first confirmation email had the subject line CD Baby loves you already!”

We do love you! I work at CD Baby and a coworker stumbled across your site. I couldn’t resist signing up.

This is awesome, and I’m excited to be a part of it!

Glad to have you Ben. If there’s anything we can do for CD Baby (besides get Eric to make more music and sell it through you guys), let us know.

Maybe I sound like a broken record ( apropos metaphor? ) …

Should we have a music or online music category and have CD Baby on there?

Obviously, we’d love it. I can recommend some other sites for the listing as well, across the range of crunchiness from Amazon (not very crunch) to sites like us and Amie Street (very crunchy).

iTunes would have to go on that list as well, I imagine, right guys?

… guys?

I posted a suggestion for online music with some stores to start with!

Awesome. Brilliant. Thank you. Makes me wonder if we should, at some point, let users start new categories. Or if we CP admins should start all suggested categories that seem to have legs and not worry about the fact that they’ll feel kinda incomplete for a while. Hmmm. Maybe I’m dreaming a bit here. But I’m glad to have a comment thread in which to store the beginnings of the dream.
