Checked in on Rod Dreher’s* blog today and learned that our First Lady and some fifth grader friends of hers spent a little time digging and planting on the South Lawn this morning.
Made me wonder what they’re growing.
Yesterday’s New York Times had the answer…
The Obamas will feed their love of Mexican food with cilantro, tomatillos and hot peppers. Lettuces will include red romaine, green oak leaf, butterhead, red leaf and galactic. There will be spinach, chard, collards and black kale. For desserts, there will be a patch of berries. And herbs will include some more unusual varieties, like anise hyssop and Thai basil. A White House carpenter, Charlie Brandts, who is a beekeeper, will tend two hives for honey.
Did you read the word carrot in there? Because I didn’t.
And now I dry the tear and breathe deep and rethink my support for this administration.^
*Note: Rod Dreher is The Crunchy Con, a Christian Conservative Dallas-based journalist. He’s a character. I’ve written about him before. I’m sure I’ll write about him again. And I’ll at least try to make the crunchy connection someday.
^Another Note: Carrots or no carrots, this is totally awesome news. I’m sure Michael Pollan is smiling. And hoping the Obamas’ll take his other advice. I figure White House kitchen transparency is the next logical step. But we’ll see.

Speaking of protesting the Obama’s kitchen garden, did you hear that an industry association of lawn and garden chemical makers has done just that? Apparently they wrote an open letter to Michelle Obama decrying her choice of an organic garden. Seriously.

I had not heard. But here’s a reprint of the letter Big Ag sent to Michelle. The letter falls into the pro corn syrup commercial category if you ask me: Unimpressively Executed Desperate Measures.

We should start a list. My favorite is the we call it life campaign from the The Competitive Enterprise Institute. Amazing.

Wow. Love the tininess of the embedded vids (I just watched them in tiny form, for the full experience). And love the fact that the words Support Liberty lie directly above a PayPal button.
