The Carrot Project

Focus on the Company, or the Product?

I was looking at the “salty snacks” this morning and noticed that very many of the products listed are from Frito-Lay, and therefore have the same carrots attached.

This has the potential to make things a little cluttered. But I’m not sure if it would be best to have more finely grained categories (“BBQ Potato Chips”) or simply focus on the companies active in the salty snacks market (Frito-Lay, Herr’s, etc…).

The former would give you more actual pages for people to look at, but the latter seems a more efficient way to deliver the information, and foster the kind of company (not individual product) comparison the site seems to be all about. Maybe different products they produce in the area (in this case salty snacks - Doritos, Lays Stax, etc…) could be listed with the company entry, so that there is still a thorough listing of choices, but a tidier look when viewing the man page where the carrots are shown.

You’re right. It is redundant to give all the different Frito-Lay brands their own pages. But the problem with collapsing them into one big listing, I think, is that people don’t immediately associate Pringles and Rold Gold Pretzels with Frito-Lay, so a lazier shopper looking to see how well their Funyuns are doing according to The Carrot Project won’t get meaningful information at a glance. But I definitely get what you’re saying. And maybe you’re right that it’d be smarter to push the brand listings inside the company entry.

Yeah, that is true (re the “lazier shoppers”).

I wonder if a product search feature could help them out, while allowing for better organization?

Search is coming. It’s on the list. Not super high on the list. But, as we add content, it’ll drift higher.

Ah, I missed that one. More finely grained categories don’t seem like they’d be all that helpful in this case (do you really want to wade through Corn Chips, Potato Chips, Nacho Chips, etc..).

It seems like the search would be integral in making this work, so I guess no sense worrying about it now.

Alternately there could be a user setting for the crazies who’d like to see things based on company - though I tend to think that displaying by company, while offering a product search is the right way to go.

Maybe it would help if we did something to visually connect a company’s brands? They are next to each other already, maybe a box where they can live together would clarify. But something more creative than a box, like a fence, or, OK, just a box.

Maybe list all of the brands but make them share one row of carrots?

That is a good idea Brent. Its’ not quite as compressed as what I had in mind, but this would make it clear that they are all the same company. This would be good, because the next company would show up as being behind only Frito-Lay, and not as behind Doritos, Pringles, Ruffles, etc…

It seems like it would work better this way, to me anyway.

Thanks Alex, I wouldn’t have had it without you!
